This is book one of The Enduring Flame Trilogy. Lackey and Mallory make a good team however
in all fairness even I could look good with Lackey. She is a towering presence in the fantasy
arena. This is the first book of what
should be a highly entertaining trilogy.
There are lovable and clueless protagonists who are forced to grow to
heroic proportions. They are tasked to
save the world from the forces of evil. Don't expect a lot of soul searching or
mental challenges; you can expect a good solid fantasy.
The characters are slowly developed and you discover
yourself investing in their success.
That is characteristic of Lackey plots, you find yourself so invested
you can’t put the darn thing down. The
two young men who find themselves as the main protagonists are eminently
likeable.
This is a terrific beginning for a trilogy that I can’t wait
to peruse.
I highly recommend.

I really enjoy their collaborations. I haven't read the Enduring Flame trilogy yet, but the Obsidian Mountain series was great. Sometimes, when we're bombarded by bloody, gritty, amoral militaristic fantasy, it's comforting to slip back into a traditional high fantasy tale.
ReplyDeleteBob, thanks for the comment, I have to agree, I didn't feel I was grabbed by the throat and forced to "experience" the story, I leaned back and just enjoyed the read.
